KISHOR CARIAPPA writes: ‘Jamma baane’ issue, high-tension electricity issue, infrastructure woes…Who is to be blamed for the problems plaguing Kodagu now? Politicians, bureaucrats, governments? Well, none of them. Infact, we the people of Kodagu should be blamed for the kind of mess we are in. Time and again, Kodagu has been suffering ‘atrocities’ at the hands of power-hungry politicians and governments, both at the state as well as centre. After the drought-affected districts of Raichur, Bidar and Gulbarga, Kodagu probably has one of the poor infrastructures in the whole of Karnataka. Bad roads, erratic power supply, no water in peak summer months…the list is endless.
Take the roads from Mysore or Mangalore or Kerala for example. It looks more of Martian craters and less like asphalted roads. The less said the better of the condition of these roads that worsen during rainy seasons. Forget the rural areas, a stroll around Madikeri town is enough to gauge the condition of asphalted roads.
It is no secret that residents of Madikeri and Virajpet suffer from severe water shortages starting from March until June every year. If we were part of Raichur or Gulbarga, we can blame our fate on nature and keep quiet. For all the hue and cry, River Cauvery which waters hundreds of hectares of land in the Cauvery basin, just flows in our backyard. Why the people of Kodagu are not getting a fair share of water, which originates from the district? We are all scratching our heads for answers.
To add to the wounds, now a high-tension power line to Kerala from Kaiga nuclear plant is being allowed to pass through areas in south Kodagu, thereby causing considerable damage to nature and raising safety concerns for inhabitants of those places. Kodagu has been reeling under power shortages for so many years now, and Kerala gets is share of electricity from the lines passing through Kodagu. Can there be a bigger irony than this?
Why aren’t we doing anything about it? What are we keeping quiet? Can’t we fight for our basic rights? We don’t need the politicians to mess in general affairs concerning the people of Kodagu. It is no secret that they do more harm than good in whatever they do.
Let us make a start. Shedding our inhibitions, ego, attitude, prestige, we shall join hands to make Kodagu a beautiful place and a model district. We have been receiving step-motherly treatment for all these years and it is time to reverse the trend.
Let us not wait for someone else to fight our battles.
We will do it on our own.
