Low accident rate

After struggling for many years, Kodagu police now proudly claim that accident rate has come down drastically along the Madikeri-Kushalnagar route for the last six months. No, police haven’t done anything dramatic to reduce the number of accidents. It is just that the Madikeri-Kushalnagar road is in such bad shape that accidents due to speeding are next to impossible. It is a wonder that vehicles manage to crawl along the stretch which is full of pot holes.

Madikeri roads are getting facelift

The road from Town Hall till Cauvery Hall will be concretized in phases, and the first phase of works have begun along the private bus stand and post office.

Think it over

Kodagu is known as Scotland of India. But Kodagu’s roads are like roads in Republic of Congo, no?

An affectionate tribute to their alma mater

MADIKERI: Alumni of St. Joseph’s Convent School came together here on Tuesday and shared their experiences. From being pranksters at school, to sensible and well-settled people now, they reminisced about old times at a function organised to celebrate the institution’s centenary.

Now members of the Former Students’ Association (FSA), they announced a ‘merit scholarship fund’ to encourage meritorious boys and girls at the institution. The announcement was well received as a centenary gift by the school authorities. Many became nostalgic, profusely thanking the institution for all it had given them and fondly appreciated their teachers too. “We felt great when cheering schoolgirls greeted us at the venue,” said Sushi Kushalappa, president of the FSA.

Former students from all over Kodagu district, and those settled in Mysore, Bangalore and other places, turned up for the celebrations that started in the morning. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Ms. Kushalappa said. “Whatever position one reaches in life, gratitude to one’s alma mater and teachers should always remain,” she added. Some members of the FSA presented a pop number called ‘Kinetic energy’, which stole the show. Schoolgirls presented a Bharatanatya sequence to match the song. Next in line was ‘Down the Ages’, a 10-minute silent show directed by vice-president of the FSA, Shobha Subbaiah. Later, the FSA anthem was sung. The principal of the school, Sister Cicily Joseph, and the Correspondent, Sister Anne, cut a centenary cake to everyone’s delight.

'Love Jihad' spreads to Kodagu

MADIKERI: Joint convener of State Hindu Jagarana Vedike K T Ullas said, Muslim youths are spreading love jihad network to woo Hindu girls in Kodagu.

Addressing a press conference here, district convener of Bajrang Dal Pudiyokkada Ramesh said, a case was registered against Sadali alias Siddiq alias Mohan of Napoklu who wooed a girl by pretending to be a Hindu. He promised to marry her and kept his friendship for a long time and tried to convert her. The girl tried to commit suicide after she realized he belonged to another community, is married and has four children. Napoklu police arrested the accused after receiving a complaint.

Ullas displayed the pamphlets, printed and distributed under the title KFD, which said that the country should be Islamized totally by 2020. The pamphlet clearly calls upon Muslim youth to woo Hindu girls and convert them. Ullas said such anti-social activities, threatening the Hindu culture, tradition and unity, is rampant in Kodagu, Turuvekere and Shira.

Convener of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Roy Thammaiah, alleged that the girls are already being converted in colleges by an outfit called `smart friends'. They cautioned Hindu girls against the danger of conversion.
