Kodava women achievers

Did you know that the first Indian woman hockey umpire to officiate in more than 50 international matches was Mrs. Anupama Mundanda? Many such interesting facts will be revealed in a book that will be published shortly.

Principal of Cauvery College, Virajpet, Dr. A. S. Poovamma as part of her research project has embarked on a mission to document Kodava women who have excelled in their field of work. Dr. Poovamma says: “There are a lot of women who have not been recognized but have been giving their best and contributing their might to the nation. My study will unearth these hidden gems and will be documented for the future generations.”

She has urged Kodava women in the field of education, sports, entertainment, business, social work, research etc to access her website www.kodavawomen.com and fill in the details so that they can be contacted by her. General public too can pass on the leads, if any.

Abbey Falls is not tourist-friendly

KISHOR CARIAPPA writes: Come weekends in monsoon and Abbey Falls is always buzzing with activity. It is common sight to see tourists thronging the place from across Karnataka to catch a glimpse of the majestic falls in full flow.

But, unfortunately the place is not tourist-friendly and nor have the authorities taken the trouble to provide more facilities for young and old visiting the place.

It is a long walk from the main gate to the actual falls. You have to traverse through a coffee estate, but sadly there are no railings on both sides of the path from the start point to the finish.

It is a basic requirement since elderly people find it difficult to walk in slippery conditions and the railing can stop a person from sliding into the ditch.

It is another story that it is impossible for a disabled person or a person on a wheel chair to get there. But no tourist spot or city in India can boast of such a facility.

The walking path is in miserable conditions with concrete chipping off in many places.

When authorities charge Rs. 20 as parking fees for cars, what facilities are they giving in return?

Zilch.

Tourists messing up the place with plastic bottles, food packets, etc.

It is high time authorities invested on tourist spots in Kodagu. Are you listening Sadananda Gowda and K G Bopaiah?
